This is the reason why he couldn’t win today. Most kids today would whine and cry about his drill sergant (sp?) ways. Good coach but very questionable at times.
I’ve met Bobby Knight. I think it would be accurate to say that he is the original Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He can be an ogre or a complete gentleman, and nobody knows hich BK it ill be from one minute to the night.
As an Ohio State alum, perhaps I have some understanding about how you feel- I knew Woody Hayes fairly well. (The joke in Columbus was that BK was Woody’s unacknowledged love child) Both men- great coaches, brilliant intellect, rotten temper.
Actually this speech was delivered in 1991. IU was the co-Big 10 Champion, went to the Final 4 the following year, and spent most of the year after that (including the final week of the regular season) ranked #1 in the AP poll.
5-6 years later the post might have been highly accurate, but Greg Graham (not covering the baseline) was an elite level player who spent time in the NBA. Add Calbert Cheaney, Alan Henderson, and Eric Anderson to the list of future NBA players in the locker room.
Does anyone have any clue when this speech happened? And did they end up beating Purdue?

i’d give my left nut to see him coach the worst nba of this seson. i bet he would take ‘em straight to the playoffs.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this speech, can’t imagine why anyone would be upset.
And did it really help? I mean Knight’s claim to fame is that 76′ team that was undefeated. I doubt very much that there were histrionics like this back then. This speech was from his late years at Indiana which were not nearly as successful, which only goes back to my point that he sounds desperate.
Damn, just by listening to him I feel like I played like shit in the 1st half.

I went to IU when he was there. I think I can speak for most IU alums when I say we love the man. For all the bullshit people talk about him, nobody ever points out the amount of money he donated back to the university, that almost 100% of his players graduated or went pro. The man had the respect of his players and of the IU fans. He is truly a legend!
I can fucking guarantee you that he talked to every single one of his teams like this when they werent performing.
so true. real coaches are leaders, and inspires us to push to the limit. this is a selfish put down out of frustration. he talks about himself “not fucking around” and accuses of his players of “maybe” fucking around. how selfish is that.
To be truthful, this particular speech smacks of desperation from someone who feels like he is losing control over what little he apparently has of his team losing. I doubt he sounded like this when his teams were talented enough to win NCAA titles. I don’t know how well people that are working/playing under anyone generally respond to total, unmitigated frustration. The yelling is expected, but his complete, uncontrolled meltdown, here, is actually very revealing.

I play college ball, I wish I could have played for him though!!! I think he could bring out the best in somebody, despite all the cussin. lol!
Not pro but alot of basketball. Suck it up and get back up. Enough of the self pity bullshit they display. Even in football they do it. Good thing they don’t play hockey!

Yea JoeSport, that is why we have to watch these overpaid athletes, wine, cry, and lay on the court after getting hit hard or fell hard! Martyrs who want to hear the crowd go “OOHHH” ” I hope he is ok” and then they get up smile dust themselves off and hug each other. That is what is produced now sissys with sissy coaches with big pay checks. It is disgusting!
