It’s 2008 and just as you did last year, and the year before that, you’ve probably set some New Year’s resolutions. By the time you get to February, these will be long forgotten as you get caught up with the daily grind of life.

Why not make a fresh start this year and do things differently by following this simple 5 step process. It’s easy, effective and very practical. It will help you make the changes that you know you need to make to bring new happiness into your life . . . starting right here, right now.

STEP 1: ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Take a few moments and reflect upon the past 12 months. Think about the high points and low points. Spend at least 5 minutes reviewing your past achievements. Then write down your answers to the following questions:

-My biggest achievements in 2007 were

-Some of the things I wanted to achieve but didn’t are

-What stopped me was

STEP 2: CREATE YOUR FUTURE

As you sit here, contemplating the year ahead, realize that many of the things you do want in your life CAN happen. So cut out three paper circles and title them ’same,’ ‘better’ and ‘best.’ These are your 2008 film reels. Now think about the year ahead and what you really want out of all the areas in your life-relationships, career, money, personal growth, health, family and friends, social life and your physical environment. Then pick up the film reel you want to choose: “same,” “better,” or “best.” Now write the script for that film.

STEP 3: MAKE IT FEEL REAL

Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” What you imagine is a powerful precursor to success. That’s why your next activity is to create a Vision Board. Simply go through some magazines and cut out pictures that visually represent what your achievement looks like, feels like, smells like, and sounds like. Pick out images, colors, words, and patterns that best represent your most important dreams and achievements for the year ahead. Then make a collage of your pictures. Reflect upon these and really feel what it would be like to achieve your dreams.

STEP 4: PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE JOURNEY

Whenever you instigate any change, you create resistance. After all, it’s so much more comfortable sitting in the comfort zone isn’t it? But if you want things to be different, then you’re going to have to make changes. In a journal, draw three columns going across the page and title them ‘the change,’ ‘the obstacle,’ and ‘the solution.’ In the first column, list the changes that you will need to make to bring your 2008 aspirations into reality. In the second column write any obstacles and finally, brainstorm and come up with some solutions. You will notice, that when there is a will, there’s a way!

STEP 5: PRIORITIZE AND GO FOR IT!

Now it’s time to summarize and prioritize. Being focused is important for turning ideas into action. Put the first things first, and make sure your goals are specific and achievable and that you have a ’support person’ to keep you on target. To finish, review all the good work you have done so far and make a list of no more than 5 goals. Nominate somebody to whom you will be accountable to, and determine how and when you will update them.

Finally, remember that you can do anything if you really put your mind to it. Success is something that may seem illusive to some people. To others it may require hard work and determination without submitting to failure. What defines success for you? People who can overcome obstacles in life are usually the ones who succeed in the long run. Perseverance is the key to success. The willingness to go on despite the feeling of failure is the most important step toward success.

Successful people take action and are confident about their decisions even if they don’t know what the outcome will be. They are decisive and willing to take risks.

Successful people enjoy their life no matter what circumstances they find themselves in. They accept the small things in life and give gratitude for them. They treat every day as a gift and not take it for granted. So they do all they can do for that day. They live in the present and not worry about the future.

Learning to be flexible when change comes takes precedence over trying to change the situation to adapt to you when it seems impossible to change it. Successful people take responsibility for their own actions. They don’t blame anyone else. They look at change as an opportunity for something greater and try to use it as a stepping-stone to go to the next lever.

Never give up if you want to be successful. You must have the tenacity to overcome and move on to the next thing. Keep motivating yourself and focus on what is good rather than the bad that happened to you.

Other people are important to successful people. They reach out to others and show kindness. They are not loners because they know that people are important to their success.

Don’t entertain self-pity. Live for today, don’t look back at the past and remember that tomorrow will take care of itself. This is how successful people think and live their lives.

Successful people dream big. Their goals are big goals. They challenge themselves and focus on using their vision to keep their dreams alive.

Coaches and mentors are an asset to the successful person. They realize that “no man is an island.” They are not afraid to ask for help.

People who want to be successful are open to learn new things. They don’t mind making the huge step outside of their comfort zone. They think long-term and seek knowledge through books, tapes, coaching, and from other people that they meet.

Do not procrastinate. Procrastination is the worst enemy of success. Being indecisive and not wanting to act quickly is absolutely unacceptable to the successful person.

Here are some quick tips to the path of your success:

1. Write your vision down. Know exactly what you want in life.

2. Set many long-term goals. Don’t worry if they seem too much for you to achieve.

3. Make immediate plans to take action. Create a sense of urgency.

4. Take a look at your vision board every day to remind yourself what is important and why you need to accomplish what you set forth to do.

5. Take at least three steps each day to accomplish your short-term goals. Your short-term goals usually get you closer to your long-term goals.

6. Discipline is one of the attributes of success. Don’t let negative people get in your space.

7. Respect and value time.

8. Be focused and live in the present.

9. Finish the entire task that you start. Do not leave unfinished business. It takes longer to complete.

10. Persistent and Perseverance are the two “P’s” that will get you to your successful destination.

11. Give yourself a reward each time you complete a task toward getting closer to your success.

12. Keep dreaming and you will finally wake up to find it there.

Cheers to your success. It can happen to you too. Don’t think it belongs to the other person. It is yours depending on how bad you want it.

Nearly everyone wants to be successful in his or her life, I say nearly everyone because you can find people who actually have no desires to succeed in anything other than to just make it day to day. Sad really.

So if this is the case, if people truly desire success and everything that comes with it such as: financial freedom, time freedom, house and car of their dreams, exotic vacations around the world, stay at the finest hotels, etc, why do people have a fear of success?

For each person there will be a different reason or reasons, you can not lump everyone into one category and say this is why people fear success, or can you?

I have read many articles on this subject and they are usually dealing with one aspect of why people fear success or many different reasons why people have the fear of success.

However there is one common denominator to each of the reasons given and that it all boils down to one thing: Fear of Change.

It doesn’t matter what reason that is given for having this fear of success cause the things that are necessary for you to be successful are going to be different from what you have been doing in the past.

Let’s look at some of the reasons I have seen or read about for people having the fear of success.

1. Comfort Zone. There is a reason why it’s called the comfort zone. People are comfortable being there. Everything is familiar to them there, there is nothing that is hardly unknown and when there is familiarity there is nothing scary to have to deal with. Nothing to be on edge or excited about.

Well in order to become successful you are going to have to change. You are going to have to leave your comfort zone and do it on a repeated basis. That is the only way you can grow and learn as a person and your business. Having to do this just once for a lot of people is scary enough but the very thought of having to keep on doing it on a regular basis is just too much to handle for many people.

Fear of change - having to leave your comfort zone.

2. Responsibility. You have to be responsible for yourself and the decisions you make along the way in growing your business. You are in charge, in the lead, and it’s up to you. Again there is change here. If you were already a leader by nature chances are you do not have a fear of success other wise you would not be a natural leader. So change must take place. You must do things that do not come naturally to you. You are leaving that comfort zone again. You must become a leader even if it’s just you who you are leading. No one else is going to make decisions for you.

Fear of change, having to take responsibility.

3. Attention factor. Are you a private person? Again change is going to have to take place. Now I am not saying you are going to lose all your rights to privacy just because you wish to have success. What I am saying is that you can no longer just blend into the crowd and not be noticed. If you wish success you are going to have to stand out, get noticed and you will. With success comes attention, no matter what field you are in, more people will know who you are.

Fear of change, having the attention now on you.

4. Higher Standards. When you are a success or climbing that ladder of success more will be demanded of you and you are going to be expected to perform at a higher level. And you should. You are going to have to go that extra mile. Just getting by, doing just enough and not meeting demands will not work. You will be expected to perform well and come through, meeting deadlines and being on time and do this on a regular basis. So again it is change we are talking about. Let’s face it, if you were already doing these things chances are you would already be a success at whatever you wish to do.

Fear of change, having to raise your standards and what is expected of you.

5. Friends / Enemies. This will happen. Get ready. When you become successful people start viewing you differently. They may gain respect or have more respect for you because of what you have accomplished or they will become envious of your newfound success and no longer wish to speak to you or just talk behind your back. People who you thought were your friends or not really true friends and co-workers whom you may not even had any sort of previous contact with just despise you just because of your success.

“Few men have the natural strength to honour a friend’s success without envy.” Aeschylus

Many people’s fear of success stem from this one reason, they do not wish to take a chance in losing friends or co-workers. These people are in their comfort zone. The thought of making new friends is just too much.

This was one of my past fears. However what I found out once I was able to get through this block was that making new friends with like minded individuals was much more rewarding. I would rather have friends that celebrate me than tolerate me.

Fear of change, may have to make new friends, be talked about by envious co-workers, accepting the idea that people who you thought they were are not who they really are.

6. Self Image. To me this is one of the major setbacks for the fear of success with people. They can not see themselves as being successful. They don’t feel they are worthy of any success that comes their way. Here again people do not wish to leave that comfort zone they have built around themselves. Before any success will come your way the very first thing that must change is you. You must change how you think, see and feel about yourself.

You must think positive and believe you are a winner. You must visualize yourself as successful. You have got to see yourself being a success before you can become a success. Also you must feel it within and know it to be true.

Fear of change, having to accept the idea you are worthy of success.

“Success will not lower its standard to us. We must raise our standard to success.” Rev. Randall R. McBride, Jr.

No matter what category you fall under as your reason or reasons for your fear of success it all comes down to change. You must change in order to see change in your life. Nothing changes until you do.
